Living Sustainably: Lessons from Studying Abroad in Lisbon

The following blog was written by a student intern on a Summer 2026 CIEE high school abroad program. Read on for an exclusive interview with a student on program in Lisbon, Portugal.

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of everyday life in Lisbon from recycling initiatives to climate awareness. Lisbon prides itself on its sustainable initiatives, even being named European Green Capital of 2020. As our High School Study Abroad students spend their summer studying both Marine Ecology and Sustainability, we asked one student to share her experience with sustainability in Lisbon. Passionate about building a better future, Maribelle G. answers everything one needs to know about living a sustainable life in Lisbon.

1.  Before coming to Lisbon, what did sustainability mean to you and has studying abroad here changed your perspective in any way?

Before coming to Lisbon, I’d regularly try to make my life as blue as possible (ocean and planet safe). I thrifted, I reused plastic for art or room decor, and I'd find a use for everything. During the first week here I learned about cultural ecosystem services. This widened my perspective on sustainability by helping me realize I can mentally regulate and support myself with the earth and use what mother nature has provided me.

2. Have you found it easy to live sustainably as a student in Lisbon? Why or why not?

Yes, I'm very glad I can answer yes confidently to this. I love being able to share my sustainable hobbies with like-minded peers. It's been fun to connect with people who care about the environment too. I also love the recycling system on the school campus, which makes it easier to sort waste.

3. In your opinion, what are some simple ways future students can reduce their environmental impact while studying abroad in Lisbon?

Shop locally, thrift clothes, spend responsibly, use reusable water bottles, and use sunscreen made with minerals, not oxybenzone!!

4. Have you noticed any differences between sustainability efforts in Lisbon and those in your home?

It's always a little hard for me to share my eco-friendly lifestyle with some friends and family .I definitely find it easier to do so here, surrounded by a community that cares. I think the best way to live sustainably is to surround yourself with people who have the same goal.

5. What advice would you give to future CIEE students who want to make environmentally conscious choices while studying abroad?

Do your research!! Find out the big companies to avoid and look for local shops and support  any company who gives back!

Studying abroad is about more than discovering a new place, it’s about experiencing a new culture and being a part of a community. By making small, sustainable choices, students can make a positive difference and give back to the places that welcome them.
