As my first week in Berlin comes to a close, I am able to reflect on my experiences and realizations. I realized there are several parallels between American and German cultures, but also quite some differences. In Europe there is definitely a stronger emphasis on “clean” and healthy eating (Aside from the ice cream shops on every corner). There is always fresh bread, fruit, and vegetables within walking distance no matter where you are. In the U.S. fast food is more prominent, and more convenient when it comes to the busy lifestyles we lead. Maybe this is why I haven’t seen many overweight people here. This is interesting because there are many small restaurants, and there are always customers eating outside of them. While they seem healthier than us in this regard, smoking is more commonplace here. t is a cultural thing, it seems like everyone here smokes. In the States, it is something looked down upon. Germans do seem to put a greater effort into water conservation and waste disposal. The toilets use less water, and interestingly, trash cans are small and placed far from one another. Even with this, I have not noticed much littering. It seems as though they are doing their part to take care of themselves and our world. America and Germany could certainly exchange notes. Communicating with one another can do nothing except improve one another’s quality of life. As far as Global Communications go, different nations need to communicate to one another, sharing ideas and practices is important when it comes to the betterment of the humanrace as a whole.
